Monitoring

How do I test my alarm system?

Testing once a month keeps your system ready.

  1. Call our office first and ask us to put your account in test mode, so the monitoring center doesn't dispatch.
  2. Arm your system, then open a protected door or trip a sensor to set off the alarm.
  3. Disarm, then call us back so we can confirm the monitoring center received the signal and take your account out of test mode.
How do I avoid false alarms?
  • Make sure everyone who uses the system knows the code and how to disarm.
  • Close and lock doors and windows before arming.
  • Keep pets out of rooms with motion sensors, or ask us about pet-friendly sensors.
  • Keep your emergency contact list current.
  • If you set off the alarm by mistake, disarm right away and answer the monitoring center's call with your passcode.

Many cities charge fees after a certain number of false alarms (see Alarm Permits below).

Going out of town?

Let us know your travel dates and who should be called while you're away. Update your emergency contacts if anyone new is checking on your home, and make sure they know how to disarm the system.

How do I update my emergency contacts or phone numbers?

Call our office at (405) 360-4224 or email service@boydsecurityalarms.com with the changes. For security, we'll verify your account passcode before making changes.

I need an alarm certificate for my insurance.

Many insurance companies offer a discount for monitored systems. Call or email us and we'll send a monitoring certificate for your policy.

Alarm Permits

Norman alarm permit

Norman requires an alarm permit from the Norman Police Department for monitored residential and commercial alarm systems. As of 2026 the fee is $25 for a new registration and $10 to renew, and permits run July 1 through June 30. Register or renew through the City of Norman permit portal, by mail, or in person at the Norman Police Department lobby. Questions: (405) 321-1600.

Oklahoma City alarm permit

Oklahoma City requires a permit for every home or business with a monitored security or fire alarm, within 15 days of the system going live. As of 2026 it costs $27, plus $17 a year to renew. Each address gets three false alarms in 365 days without a fee; after that, fees apply for each police or fire response. Questions: (405) 297-1109.

Other cities

Rules differ in Moore, Edmond, Mustang, Newcastle and other towns. Check with your city or police department, or call us and we'll help you find out what's required at your address.

Equipment

My smoke detector is beeping or chirping.

A chirp every minute or so usually means a low battery. Replace the battery, or call us if the detector is part of your monitored system and we'll walk you through it. If a detector is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced. If you ever smell smoke or the alarm is sounding, leave the building and call 911.

My panel shows a trouble or low-battery message.

Check that the panel is plugged in and that power is on. Note the message on the screen and call us at (405) 360-4224. Most trouble messages are quick to fix over the phone.

User manuals

Need the manual for your panel or keypad? Call or email us with the model on your panel (for example, Qolsys IQ Panel 5, DSC or Honeywell) and we'll send you the right guide.

Upgrading old equipment

Older panels may need an upgrade to work with today's cellular monitoring. Ask us about moving to the Qolsys IQ Panel 5 with cellular monitoring. See Existing System Monitoring.

Billing

How does billing work?

Cellular monitoring starts at $35/month with a 12-month agreement and autopay. Service visits aren't included in the monthly fee; you pay for service when you need it, and optional service plans are available. Questions about your bill? Call (405) 360-4224.

Moving?

Tell us your moving date and new address. We can help you set up monitoring at your new home.
